This post comes as the first for 2010 also this will be the first post for wordpress directly . So again it is going to be yet another movie review , the movie being the much hyped ” Ayirathil Oruvan ” , i was able to catch up with this movie last saturday (16-1-2010) . The reason i said it was much hyped because it was a Selvaraghavan who really makes movies out of the box , ( 7g rainbow colony , pudhupettai being classic examples ) . This again comes as a very big surprise for the movie goer , this movie cannot be put into any genre , but i chose “Action/Adventure and Historic ” .
The reason i gave historic was because the audience are taken to ancient times ( not ancient in fact ) of the cholas and pandyas period . The disclaimer at the start says it has nothing to do with the stories of pandyas and cholas , so given this one is assured of a story spun in a different way in which one might not have read in any history books ( brave attempt indeed ) .
Karthi has got better after his successful and praised role in paruthiveeran , but his second half performance is clearly overshadowed by reemma sen ( i beleive i got the name rite ) and parthiban . Here again Parthiban recieves a great appreciation from all for his outstanding performance . Andrea has done here role too , her voice in some songs also sounds good .
The story begins with an archaeological team headed by reemma sen , andrea go in search of andrea`s lost father who again turns out to be a archaeologist . karthi accompanies them as a bubbly coolie , his one liners tickles everyone`s funny bone . When they land in the island they jump into a big trouble , many begin to lose their lives ,Andrea knowing the entire dangers of the place guides the rest of the team . The snake part and the quick sand part are very well done and makes the audience awestruck .
Finally the first half which is in fact very well compiled gets over by the three ( karthi , reemma , andrea ) finding the place and the rest ( really that was not shown ) , ” Un mela asaidaan ” sounds different but the dance steps seem to be a bit irritating .
The second half is completely a googly , an unexpected turn of events happens . Reemma claims her to be a queen who had come all the way to recover a lost statue of their empire and Karthi guides the rest of the people to safety along with parthiban fighting against reemma and her forces . Some scenes really stand out , the one notable being karthi involved in the fight against that hulk like guy with a hammer thrower in his hand . Reemma sen has done exceedingly well but can improve a lot on her lip sync as the tamil which is spoken in the second half is completely different .
So the movie ends after seeing blood everywhere and a graphic in the end saying to be continued , maybe the second part will produce a better climax , that is what my assumption is . Selva has been making news recently that this movie seems to be a copy of many hollywood movies , honestly speaking my answer would be No ! just because it takes a lot of courage to show such a story as a movie , well played selvaraghavan …
The loose ends of the movie are
1.The second half , this could have better told really .
2.The climax , they have promised a sequel but this story came to an abrupt end
3.pulling pandyas and cholas into the story , this was not required , there are chances that today`s generation will not be in a position to know what was the exact history .
Maybe this movie can be wathced for 3 hours for sheer art of good story telling and some nice camera work and also hear good tamil after very long time ( excluding some very filthy words throughout the movie )
So this is my rating , i would have given much higher but the second half was a bit off beat i thought
* * * out of a possible 5
