Believe i am really lucky to see this early , never knew a random movie would be this good. I have never started a review this way , but “Aranya Kandam” was too good to be said like this. A few movies make you think about them even after you have left the theaters, unfortunately people satisfy themselves(especially the tamil audience) after watching a English flick , and to go with i belong to that category. The common comment that crops up from all is , tamil movies do not make an appeal for the international audience , very true , our movies will make an impact only when the cinema goers mindset improves and we start to welcome movies that does something out of the ordinary.
So Aranya Kandam has everything to call it a very good movie but for some reason people will not like this , given their same comments again “too much blood , filthy words use ” . Again saying the words ” The mindset of the film goer should change” , we have been seeing tamil cinema as just a medium to entertain people , sadly we are still not into the different genres , I can rate Aranya Kandam as a very good attempt to break the ice , a movie with no songs , a welcome change , a new director making a bold attempt , a very good change , a producer who backed his team and made a movie like this , Hats off !!
Why did they name this Aranya Kandam ?? Ramayana has a part of the chapter titled this way and this is how the story goes here (an epic and here it goes )
Rama, Sita and Lakshmana journeyed southward along the banks of river Godavari, where they built cottages and lived off the land. At the Panchavati forest they are visited by a rakshasa woman, Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana. She attempts to seduce the brothers and, failing in this, attempts to kill Sita. Lakshmana stops her by cutting off her nose and ears. Hearing of this, her demon brother, Khara, organizes an attack against the princes. Rama annihilates Khara and his demons.
When news of these events reaches Ravana, he resolves to destroy Rama by capturing Sita with the aid of the rakshasa Maricha. Maricha, assuming the form of a golden deer, captivates Sita’s attention. Entranced by the beauty of the deer, Sita pleads with Rama to capture it. Rama, aware that this is the play of the demons, is unable to dissuade Sita from her desire and chases the deer into the forest, leaving Sita under Lakshmana’s guard. After some time Sita hears Rama calling out to her; afraid for his life she insists that Lakshmana rush to his aid. Lakshmana tries to assure her that Rama is invincible, and that it is best if he continues to follow Rama’s orders to protect her. On the verge of hysterics Sita insists that it is not she but Rama who needs Lakshmana’s help. He obeys her wish but stipulates that she is not to leave the cottage or entertain any strangers. Finally with the coast clear, Ravana appears in the guise of an ascetic requesting Sita’s hospitality. Unaware of the devious plan of her guest, Sita is then forcibly carried away by the evil Ravana.
Jatayu, a vulture, tries to rescue Sita, but is mortally wounded. At Lanka, Sita is kept under the heavy guard of rakshasis. Ravana demands Sita marry him, but Sita, eternally devoted to Rama, refuses. Rama and Lakshmana learn about Sita’s abduction from Jatayu, and immediately set out to save her. During their search, they meet the demon Kabandha and the ascetic Shabari, who direct them towards Sugriva and Hanuman ( copied from Wikipedia ).
After reading the above lines i was really able to relate a few instances , not characters but !! The movie is a gangsta fight between two groups and the twists and turns make it a worth to watch and makes it a stand alone from the rest of gansta movies that has been taken in the past. Jackie Sheroff is brilliant , a veteran but plays his role to brilliance , Ravikrishna looks innocent to his character and does well , others have been brilliant too , especially the kid who has played is too good .
Thevaikku erpa seiyum anaithum dharmame , a message well conveyed , Yuvan Shankar Raja stands out , still thinks after pudupettai this is the best background score he has done .
Bottomline Aranya Kandam is engrossing , watch it alone if you love good cinema , has been really a long time a bold attempt like this has been made in tamil cinema , well done ( clap of hands).
Can give this a * * * * * out of a possible 5 .
